North Carolina Currency. August 21, 1775 Session at Hillsborough Act. Ten Dollars. No.144. Four signatures, signed by R.[ichard] Caswell, Andrew Knox, Sam.[uel] Johnston, and R.[ichard] Cogdell. Printed on laid paper (similar to December 1771 Act paper type). 111mm by 70mm. Uniface, ornate left end border, various fonts with 'North Carolina Currency' in Gothic type, and vignette at lower left. Vignette with twelve arms, six on each side, reaching at a pole with Liberty cap upon altar of Magna Charta; motto HANC TUEMAR HAC NITIMUR [This we guard, for we strive]. Printed from engraved plates with no imprint. A final note from this rare series of notes and the highest denomination issued. Only 3,000 notes emitted (compared to 4,000 for the others) and most were hard used. Good to Very Good. Vertical split, paper patch on the back. Three chipped and rough corners, all crudely patched. Some other back repairs to protect the note's integrity. The vignette is still quite sharp and not all that bad looking. High grade notes on this issue and type are not ''order off the shelf'' luxuries.
