Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 2295 1850'O' AU $6,500.00 About Uncirculated. Bright yellow-gold surfaces include concentrations of lustre around the reliefs. Actual circulation is scarcely visible, more notable is the bag marking to be seen on either side. 'O' mintmark is large and overlaps the tailfeathers. 2296 1852 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $6,500.00 Silky mint lustre bathes the surfaces of this lemon yellow beauty. A bold strike and lack of meaningful marks adds to the handsome charm of this specimen. 2297 1852'O' CH EF $2,900.00 Choice Extremely Fine. A greenish-gold patina over gently cleaned surfaces. The strike is adequate for this early Type I Double Eagle. A respectable appearing coin despite the cleaning and a coin that should be closely viewed for its other characteristics. Only 190,000 pieces struck. 2298 1853'O' AU $3,750.00 About Uncirculated. This butter yellow example displays a good deal of protected mint lustre. No wear is evident although there is some friction from storage amongst other coins. A pleasing example of this better date. 2299 1854'S' Small Date. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,600.00 Much deeply glowing lustre shows evidence of salt water recovery, almost certainly from the wreck of the vessel Yankee Blade. This recovery preceded more recent and forcefully publicized marine salvage operations and the coins from this wreck have a well-developed track record of collectibility. 2300 1858'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $5,500.00 - with some claims to a higher grade. The obverse is reflective which magnifies the moderate abrasion that is present. The reverse is more satiny with an attractive glow. Very well struck. Many of this date were found on the S.S. Republic and most were in About Uncirculated or lower grades. An underrated date in this condition that is sure to elicit strong bidding. 2301 1860 CH AU $1,800.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Satiny mint bloom radiates from the surfaces of this pleasing lemon yellow example. Just a touch of rub keeps this well defined example from full Mint State. NGC AU58. 2302 1860'S' AU $1,500.00 About Uncirculated. Bright yellow-gold patina that magnifies some moderate field abrasion. Nicely struck for a Type I Double Eagle. Although this coin has a high mintage, it is quite scarce in About Uncirculated or better and should be strongly considered for a well balanced type or date set. 2303 1865'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $5,000.00 - close to Choice. Softly gleaming mint frost laves both sides of this delightful, fully struck coin. Closest examination suggests probable marine recovery, possibly from the famous wreck of the S.S. Brother Jonathan, which was carrying a large part of the year's San Francisco Gold mintage. PCGS MS62. 2304 1869 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $6,500.00 - with claims to the Choice category. Fully reflective fields contrast wonderfully with the frosty devices. Some light abrasion is magnified by the reflectivity but does not detract much from the eye appeal of this very difficult date. The lustre is extraordinary and gives this coin a great look. 2305 1872'CC' EF $2,900.00 Extremely Fine. A well balanced example that exhibits green-gold toning. The strike is typical for this date and the surfaces show some moderate abrasion on the obverse. A scarce date with only 26,900 pieces struck and probably less available through attrition. 2306 1873 Open 3. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $2,300.00 A careful strike shows a remarkable boldness of detail, especially on the reverse. Canary-yellow gold lustre is rich and full, the obverse displaying a few minute contact tics typical of these large and heavy gold coins, but fewer than usual for a date Breen described as ''usually heavily bag-marked.'' The Open 3 variety was created after Mint Director James Pollock ordered Chief Engraver...  more 2307 1873 Open 3. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $550.00 Well struck with moderate field abrasion as this coin's main detraction. The lustre is attractive over greenish-gold surfaces with some pale pinkish overtones. 2308 1873'S' Open 3 AU $600.00 About Uncirculated. Bright from a past dipping leaving some moderate abrasion. The strike is good for the type and there are no other major detractions worth mentioning. 2309 1875 AU $600.00 About Uncirculated. A strong example for the grade with plenty of frosty mint lustre. Just light rub is found at the high points, giving this lemon yellow example a level of eye appeal that is superior to most low grade Mint State coins. 2310 1876 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,100.00 Here is a well struck pinkish gold example. A pair of thin marks are evident at Liberty's chin, lips and the adjacent area of the field but are not overly bothersome. A wealth of frosty mint lustre radiates from this specimen for a pleasing level of eye appeal. 2311 1876 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $650.00 - with claims to a higher grade. Attractive mint lustre radiates from the surfaces. The strike is bold for this coin struck in greenish-gold. Some light field abrasion is this coin's main detraction. An above average coin that should be closely viewed. 2312 1876'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $975.00 - or nearly so. The obverse has some light abrasion, otherwise it exhibits full mint bloom. The strike is excellent for this Type II Double Eagle. An excellent example of this gold type coin. 2313 1876'S' AU $500.00 About Uncirculated, fully lustrous for bold visual effect. This cartwheel-flashing reverse shows the 'S' mintmark amazingly far to the right, below the fourth and fifth tailfeathers. 2314 1877 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $800.00 A frosty, better than average example with a reverse that is easily Choice. A charming example for the first year of the Type Three Double Eagle design. 2315 1877'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,000.00 Greenish-gold toning frames a lighter gold shade in the center. Wonderful mint lustre gives this coin great appeal. A bold strike further defines this early Double Eagle. 2316 1878 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $800.00 Honey gold surfaces display boldly struck motifs and a wealth of frosty lustre. 2317 1879 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,500.00 This example is fully bathed in fresh mint bloom. A razor sharp strike has made even the most minuscule of details plainly visible. 2318 1879'O' CH AU $50,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated, not far from Mint State. Whatever wear may be present is essentially invisible to the naked eye. Prooflike lustre in the fields highlights the sharply impressed reliefs and major devices that are basically free of distracting marks. One of 2,325 struck, long before American collectors awakened to the opportunities offered in collecting by mintmark. A well struck salmon gold example. 2320 1881'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,200.00 - and significantly better than the norm. The lustre is vibrant and the presentation is quite enticing. 2321 1882'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $800.00 - and a better than average specimen. Attractive champagne rose toning and a wealth of frosty mint bloom give this coin an exciting look. 2322 1883'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,700.00 A rose gold example that is bathed in frosty lustre for an attractive look. 2323 1883'S' AU $500.00 About Uncirculated. Smooth surfaces offer minimal wear and much lustre. Close study reveals a light cleaning long ago. 2324 1884'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,600.00 - or a bit better.
